West-Park Church Watch

New, 10 comments

Whither the fate of the Upper West Side's West-Park Presbyterian Church, the subject of much speculation last month about its possible demolition? Bloomberg architecture critic James Russell files on the question, and doesn't think preservation provides an easy answer: "Designation can't directly aid a financially strapped congregation that has shrunk over the years. West Park simply does not have the millions of dollars it would take to restore the church... West Park is one of many at-risk worship buildings that call for a broad, concerted effort by the city and builds on efforts of advocates like the New York Landmark Conservancy to unite cash, communities and expertise."
