WTC Church Deal Off

New, 36 comments

The tiny St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, crushed when the Twin Towers collapsed on 9/11, is again causing major headaches for the Port Authority at Ground Zero. Eight months ago a deal was announced between both sides, with the Port Authority giving the church a piece of land near its old spot and $20 million to build a larger building, while the Port Authority would use the old land to build a vehicle-inspection station for the WTC. That deal has now fallen through, with both sblaming the other for making too many demands. The Port Authority now says St. Nicholas can rebuild its church on the old parcel of land at Cedar and West Streets, and it'll seize the land beneath the church via eminent domain to build the Vehicle Security Center.
