Revealed: Ladies' Mile Gets Fitted for a Glass Slipper

New, 24 comments

Are glass buildings suddenly all the rage? First we had the reveal of Tribeca's Glass Atelier?made with glass bricks!?and now comes word of architect Morris Adjmi's plan for 16 West 21st Street, a sliver of a building in the Ladies' Mile Historic District. The project won Landmarks Preservation Commission approval last April. Per Adjmi's website:

This distinctive 14 story residential building will combine the historic vocabulary of the New York Ladies Mile Historic District with a facade constructed entirely out of glass materials. Arranged according to classical proportions, the columns, spandrels and cornice will be made out of frosted glass.Adjmi, of course, is no stranger to building with unlikely materials. Construction photos on his website show that 16 West 21st Street?with nine full-floor apartments, a garden-level duplex and a penthouse triplex?is already rising. Gently, we hope.
