The war over advertecture has spread to Fourth Avenue and 9th Street near Astor Place, where the Buildings Department has issued more than 70 violations?totaling $955,000 in fines?to a co-op board, sign company and two installers over the billboard on the side of a building. The co-op argues that the building should be grandfathered in because the wall has been used for advertisements for over 70 years (a faded vintage men's suits ad can be seen painted on the building). Says the DOB, "We will not tolerate any individuals or companies who disregard the law to make a profit." [NYDN]
