Mayor Against EPA's Gowanus Cleanup

New, 19 comments

Mayor Bloomberg has come out against the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed addition of the Gowanus Canal to the agency's Superfund list, arguing that the EPA's cleanup of the contaminated site would take too long and stymie the area's development. The city's rep was both booed and cheered by the crowd at a Superfund forum yesterday, City Room reports. Toll Brothers, the developer aiming to build luxury housing in the area, is lobbying hard against the EPA. Said an EPA rep at the forum: "Our express goal is not to slow down in any way, not to hinder in any way, the redevelopment aims of the community." And they want to pump federal cash into cleaning up the putrid mess? What assholes! [City Room]
