One might think that the angry reaction to the "renovation" of Bob Dylan's old room at the Hotel Chelsea (and the accompanying press coverage) would stop the hotel's management from tinkering with any other classic elements of of the legendary artists' enclave in the near future. Not so, based on what we're seeing and reading over at the Hotel Chelsea Blog. The mailboxes are gone! "The mailboxes together with the surrounding woodwork at the desk were one of the most picturesque and widely photographed features of the lobby," says the blog, before adding this whisper: "We were hoping that management was just going to repaint or refurbish the boxes in some way, but word is they have been destroyed, apparently out of spite."
