11 Spring Street Mystery Revealed!

New, 7 comments

John Simpson, the longtime owner and sole resident of our beloved 11 Spring Street in Nolita, emerges from obscurity to chat it up with the folks at Core that are now marketing the renovated apartments in the building. One big reveal: his impetus to put candles in the window of the building, which burned nightly until just a few years back. "[John] had extra candles left over from the 1964 New York World's Fair. He didn't know what to do with them, so he put them in the window. No dramatic reason, just the simple need to do something creative. I laughed out loud. The public has been creating a theatrical story for decades! And all along, it was an effortless act." That said, we're not buying Simpson's denial of the icehouse legend for one solitary second.
