CROWN HEIGHTS?The horrors of Brooklyn real estate development are not limited to Greenpoint alone, of course. While clicking through the Curbed Photo Pool today we came across the above funky thing, at 950 St. John's Place. According to DOB permits it'll be a six-story, six-unit residential building. Looks like it's shaping up to be something truly special. [Curbed Photo Pool]
FAR WEST VILLAGE?Mere hours after this morning's anti-hotel rumblings in the Far West Village, the $31 million listing for meat man Pat La Frieda's Washington Street warehouse was revealed, including a pitch for a "commercial office, hotel, gallery and/or condo development" up to 10 stories on the property. We asked the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation's Andrew Berman to comment on the madness. Here's what he had to say:
Last year the City actually rezoned this site, over strong community opposition, to make it more developer-friendly, making this sort of inevitable. Whether or not the kind of deal they are asking for is going to happen right now in this market remains to be seen however. Someone's always looking to cash in, but you've really got to wonder if more high-rise luxury condos or overpriced hotels is really what New York needs right now.
