In for Spring: Renzo Piano's Whitney Museum Accessorizes

New, 1 comment

Our eye isn't normally drawn to the window displays at Diane von Furstenberg's MePa showroom, but over the weekend the slinky dresses and boho chic bags were replaced with something a bit more interesting (sorry, Racked). As part of the Meatpacking District's Design Week '09, an architectural model of Renzo Piano's new Whitney Museum was put on display. The design of the Italian starchitect's 50,000-square-foot art bunker has been somewhat kept under wraps as whispers of the Whitney's fundraising shortcomings have gotten louder. The museum, to be located a few doors down from DFV at 820 Washington Street, is supposed to be the anchor of the High Line's southern starting point. Money troubles or not, the old meatpacking plant currently on the site is being demolished. Hopefully it isn't just DVF's collection getting unveiled on the block when the Whitney's targeted 2012 opening rolls around.
