Checking In #1: Port Authority Threesome is 'Hotel Hell'

New, 8 comments

When the LamCube was lifted high above West 40th Street to top a rising budget hotel (outlined in yellow above; N.B., we didn't add the yellow), we thought the gesture would be noted architect Gene Kaufman's signature addition to the block. Oh, how the residents at nearby luxury tower The Orion wish we were right! The hotel is one of several Kaufman creations going up next to one another, and now those Orion buyers up on 42nd Street don't have merely the unsightly Port Authority parking lot to deal with. One writes:

West 40th Street is hotel hell. What did we do to deserve this?? The lights are coming on at the Ronald McDonald House. They tested it last night. It's even worse in the dark, but my iphone doesn't do justice. Please help us."We believe this is the backside of what HotelChatter refers to as the Tri-Pack (all these McSam/Lam Group-commissioned Kaufman creations blend together after a while), in which case our tipster's only solace is added delays?and maybe a respite from the light show.
