Columbia Expansion Gets Nod From the State; Courts Next?

New, 4 comments

Last week a court tossed out the eminent domain lawsuit against developer Forest City Ratner at Brooklyn's Atlantic Yards, so what's new with the city's other huge land-seizure spat: Columbia's 17-acre expansion into the Manhattanville section of West Harlem? Glad you asked! The Columbia Spectator reports that the university has received its final approval from New York State for the academic takeover of large swaths of property between 125th Street and 133rd Street, just west of St. Nicholas Park. But the path is not yet completely clear for Columbia. Today, that ever-popular New York State Appellate Court will hold a hearing on the appeal brought by Manhattanville landowner and Columbia opponent Nick Sprayregen against the state's use of eminent domain. Sprayregen's attempt to cage this animal is a long-shot, but crazier things have happened. Nate Archibald, your new stomping grounds hang in the balance!
