The Oakland, named after McGuinness Boulevard's original moniker, is on the verge of opening its sales office on Bedford Avenue. To most observers, this means little to nothing, but to dedicated North Brooklynites?such as Miss Heather?a Greenpoint building opening a sales office in Williamsburg is tantamount to treason. Plus, it looks like a bar. (And was supposed to be a pizza place.) Yep, The Oakland is doing things a bit differently, and that carries through to the well-underway building itself, located in the triangular development hotbed between McCarren and McGolrick Parks and, er, the BQE. The developer is a Greenpoint local who's at the site every day, and the focus?if you can't tell by the dramatic prose on the preview website ("We’ve passed through the dark ages of standard-less housing")?is on craftsmanship. The units, all with balconies and priced around $600/sf, are big on cherrywood and marble, and the kitchens are hand-built locally. Ceilings are over 10' high and the walls are "sound attenuated." Building amenities include underground parking, a sun deck, a big common courtyard and a lounge area lined with reclaimed brick. Need to be convinced about the neighborhood? Call the sales office at 718-228-3884 and prepare for the most rah-rah Greenpoint voice mail message of all time.
