The Apthorp's long and winding road from iconic rental home of the rich and famous to condo conversion on a very tight deadline has left a sour taste in the mouths of many rent-stabilized tenants still residing in the Upper West Side treasure. And don't get us started on what the booted tenants think! But the Apthorp's owners need to hit that sales mark of 25 units in two month's time or risk the abandonment of the condo conversion plan, and they can't rely solely on fickle celebrities. And so, for the first time, building management is broaching the subject of insider pricing.
A letter slipped to Apthorp tenants promises a big Hump Day up at Broadway and 78th Street: "In connection with the conversion of the Apthorp, we are pleased to announce that we will be holding a meeting to discuss Tenant Purchase Prices. Please join us in Apartment #8A on Wednesday, July 15th at 6:30 pm." Truce! Peace in our time! But here's the thing: Can the prices possibly go lower than what the latest PriceChopping in the building left them at? And if so, what will Coke Wisdom do?
