Pier A Doomed

New, 1 comment

More hard times for Pier A, the Battery Park landmark left to rot for decades only to see a renewed renovation effort take off and sputter anew. The Battery Park City Authority, which scored the rent-free lease from the city to fix up and find an operator to turn the pier into a tourist destination, now says the project will likely not make money. Pier A suffered a setback when the National Park Service dropped plans to relocate Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferries there. Attempts to sign up a restaurant have also been disappointing. Said one board member: "I'm not trying to be a soothsayer of doom — it’s just not an easy place to put anything." [DE]
