Big Poon with Bowery Views Coming to Chinatown

New, 5 comments

How low will Bowery gentrification go? Pretty darn low! We head south, all the way down to Bowery and Canal Street, where a 27-story mixed-use condo/hotel project is slated to rise amid all the traffic streaming on and off the Manhattan Bridge. The 50 Bowery project is to be done up by Peter Poon Architects, whose work has left us feeling blue in the past. The building will rise next door to Chinatown's grand old Citizen's Savings Bank, a gold domed mountain of stone by Clarence W. Brazer that went up some 85 years ago when times were even tougher than they are now. According to DOB records, the plan is for a four-story base for assorted uses and, above that, 12 middle stories holding 99 hotel rooms and 63 apartments in the top 11 stories. That's a lot of Poon.
