The warehouse occupying a huge portion of the Public Place site between Smith Street and the Gowanus Canal on the outskirts of Carroll Gardens mostly collapsed last night around 10pm, crushing seven vehicles but sparing any human lives, according to Brownstoner. The warehouse—at 455-459 Smith Street—had been approved for demolition last year, and had been under the sledgehammer since spring. The site, set to be home to new housing projects, has quite a poisonous history indeed.
