Imprisoned Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff's Montauk beach house will be sold ever so soon, and then it's time for the good folks at the U.S. Marshals service to take their Madoff Fire Sale '09 roadshow to the Upper East Side. We've dabbled in Madoff's 133 East 64th Street duplex penthouse before, but the Marshals have finally let the press into the posh co-op to build hype ahead of the bidding. Because this is no ordinary Upper East Side listing, the Post's video walk-through of the 4,000-square-foot, three-bedroom penthouse is led by a U.S. Marshal clearly reveling in the role of playing broker ("There's a lot of personality," "These are probably hand carved," "Solarium-type windows, great breakfast nook," etc.).
Madoff's personal effects are mostly stored in boxes in the closets, and what's left out is tagged for inventory purposes. Not the best staging we've ever seen on an apartment expected to fetch at least $7.5 million, but hey, they're Feds. We've pulled out the highlights and put them in the gallery above, but for those who want the full surreal experience, the video is after the jump.
The penthouse sale should take longer than the other Madoff properties, because there's that tough co-op board to deal with. And let's assume that Matt Lauer will at least be triple-background-checking his potential new neighbor.
