Landmarking for the Children

New, 11 comments

The latest in the saga of P.S. 186, the Harlem school that some think should get the condo treatment: Community Board 9 has voted to recommend landmarking the building. Partly, the neighbors seem to want it out of the clutches of the M.L. Wilson Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, which purchased P.S. 186 23 years ago with promises to restore it: "One frustrated Hamilton Heights resident mentioned that he has lived around the corner from the school for over 30 years and has not once known a boy or girl ever attend or benefit from said Boys and Girls Club, wondering aloud if the group's sentimental stated purpose of serving children was merely a facade." This one's going to be fun to watch. [Harlem Bespoke; previously]
