Defending Staten Island From The Shore

New, 12 comments

In the best Slate essay on Staten Island you'll read this week, Jonah Weiner assesses the portrayal of the forgotten borough through the prism of pop culture?like those lovable Jersey Shore tykes, three of whom call the island home. Weiner himself is a Staten Islander (hailing from the hipster St. George hood), so he takes this stuff seriously. On SI's outsider status: "Staten Island is much harder to assimilate into the fabric of New York. Politically, culturally, and sociologically, it is the strangest bedfellow in the city's ménage à cinq, regarded as a little red state full of orange people who seem to have crash-landed on our blue planet."
