A former kidnapper let out of jail after 14 years with a promise to be "problem-free" changed career paths to become a Manhattan property manager?and is now accused of embezzling $2 million from buildings managed by his firm. Whoops! Richard Bassik's firm, Downtown Properties, ran off with money mostly from elderly condo owners and artsy loft residents, as well as from his own lawyer. On the plus side, though, at least one co-op Bassik scammed will be doing a criminal background check on its next managing agent. Lesson learned? [NYDN]
