One (okay, the only) reason not to avoid Times Square this weekend: there's a solar-powered house there! The 600-square-foot Lumenhaus is entirely solar-powered, to the tune of 42 solar roof panels. Those roof panels are sloped to collect rainwater, and the place is insulated by gel-filled panels. Roving photographer Will Femia stopped by to get some shots of the place, which took third place last year in the Energy Department's Solar Decathlon competition and which will be across from the TKTS booth through Sunday. This model cost $500,000 to build, but the designers say a mass-produced version could cost as little as $250,000.
