Earlier this week we got an amazing aerial look at the New York of 1924, but today we're taking it back even further?to a time when saying "pre-war" meant Lincoln was still on the campaign trail. A tipster just pointed us to an incredible digital image collection on the NYPL's website titled Classic 6: New York City Apartment Building Living, 1880s-1910s. In it are over 1,300 images from catalogs and circulars for wrought-iron gates, bathroom fixtures and, here's the fun part, apartment buildings themselves. Jackpot!
It's a treasure trove of photos and floorplan porn, and since pre-war never goes out of style many of these buildings are hanging around today. Like 903 Park Avenue (above), which still looks good even if it's no longer, as the vintage brokerbabble states, "the tallest apartment house in the world, being seventeen stories high." We tossed some other interesting gifts from the Ghost of Real Estate Past in the photo gallery up top. Says our tipster, "And you can buy a print version of any of the layouts... so even if you can't afford to buy an actual classic six, you can at least hang one on your studio wall."
