Man Squats for 12 Years in East Village, Gets Sued

New, 1 comment

Humberto Abenoza has been living at a fifth-floor walk-up at 184 East 2nd Street for 12 years now after the death of the owner, Siyah Sharaf. Now Sharaf's brother, Wahid, is filing a lawsuit for $273,000 against Abenoza and the condo-board president Raymond Sotnychuk claiming that the men caused $70,000 in damages to the apartment after taking it without permission. The squatters claim that they had permission and have paid about $70,000 in maintenance and mortgages on the apartment. Abenoza also claims that Sharaf allowed him to buy the apartment for an additional $20,000 after the debts were paid. [NYP]
