With the rental market heating up again, Manhattan's about due for an increase in rental scams, with 5,500 reported so far this year. (Last year's total was a record 7,225.) Mostly, these take the form of illegal Craigslist postings that lure renters into sending their deposits to scammers. But landlords can get hurt, too: one scam involves renters sending counterfeit deposit checks and then backing out and asking landlords for refunds. [WSJ]
