One secret went unrevealed in the exposé on the backyard treehouse behind artist Melinda Hackett's West 12th Street townhouse: How did the treehouse get "landmarked" after neighbors complained about it a few years back? According to an AP story posted by Gawker, the treehouse was deemed recreational equipment for the 1860s house, and therefore got granted similar protections. So the next time the city denies an application for a new window frame because you're in a historic district, just build a treehouse instead!
