Frank Gehry's building blocks live! A bunch of politicians, including Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Paterson and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, just remembered that the World Trade Center Performing Arts Center is something that's supposed to exist, so they've announced an agreement to create a $100 million fund (thanks, Feds!) to make sure it gets built. The cultural capital of Lower Manhattan was in the WTC redevelopment master plan but has been bounced around like a ping pong ball during all the drama surrounding Ground Zero's rebuilding. It barely survived, and the only tenant still signed up is the Joyce dance company. In 2006 Frank Gehry was enlisted to design the building?which will include a 1,000-seat theater, a smaller second stage, rehearsal space, classrooms and a café?but we haven't seen much of the design so far. Dance for us, Gehry!
