The Bowery Gets a Dose of Flower Power

The New Museum was a shining symbol of the gentrified Bowery when it opened in 2007. It still is, but the message has changed. As rumored and then as promised, Ugo Rondinone's rainbow-colored "Hell, Yes!" sign has been replaced on the museum's facade by a 28-foot-tall steel rose sculpture created by Isa Genzken. A muted memorial to all the flophouses we've lost? Maybe, maybe not. We're just bummed we can no longer say "See you in hell!" to people entering the museum.
