Rally for East Village Houses; Paul Rudolph's Old Digs Landmarked

New, 2 comments

EAST VILLAGE?Today a rally was held by a number of groups and politicians?including the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, East Village Community Coalition, Historic Districts Council, City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh?to call attention to 326 and 328 East 4th Street. There's a nasty little preservation battle going on over the new owner's plan to alter and build atop the historic townhouses, recently a wacky bohemian commune, and so far the Landmarks Preservation Commission has been silent. BEEKMAN, UWS?It wasn't all just celebrity sightings at the Landmarks Preservation Commission today. The LPC also designated some fresh landmarks, headlined by late architect Paul Rudolph's half modern/half traditional townhouse at 23 Beekman Place, no stranger to controversy. (More on the new landmarks in the LPC's PDF press release.) The LPC also voted to place the Upper West Side's ginormous Riverside-West End Historic District on its calendar for public hearings. The study area has been divided into three separate historic district extensions, so this may take a while. [CurbedWire Inbox]
