It might be a stretch, but on his The Grumbler spinoff blog, Vanishing New York's Jeremiah notes an increase in non-homeless people sitting on sidewalks and calls it a sign of gentrification. His thesis: "It's the assumption of sterility. All those shiny boxes, those condos and newsstands made of glass, all that Bloombergian glitter makes people think everything in New York is clean, so the sidewalks must be too."
