The Barclays Center is Brooklyn's New Man of Steel

While a Brooklyn theater troupe sings songs about it on a Fort Greene stage, Atlantic Yards riseth, officially! Today developer Forest City Ratner invited media up on the roof of the Atlantic Center to watch the start of the erection of steel (is it getting hot in here?) at the Barclays Center. That's right, the arena is finally going vertical, and there wasn't even a weepy Russian billionaire around to see it happen. We filled in for him, though, so check out the scene in the gallery above. Over 100 tons of steel arrived at the footprint last week, about 1% of the total steel to be used. The rest of the arena will be built out of reclaimed PBR cans found near the site.
