Inside an Artist's Destroyed Carnegie Hall Apartment

New, 9 comments

Though the heated eviction battle over the Carnegie Hall studios is over, not all of the former tenants are ready to forget about their longtime homes. One, photographer and filmmaker Josef Astor, lived and worked above the famed concert hall for 22 years, and has made a documentary about the end of the artists' studios called Lost Bohemia. He spoke to Vanishing New York about his experiences as one of Carnegie Hall's "newer tenants," but our eye is most drawn to VNY's peek into the building's demolition process (the studios are being turned into classrooms and other new facilities). Above, the recent state of Astor's old studio. Below, what it looked like before Astor got the boot.
