Friends, are there sweeter words on a Friday than, "We've recently added a series of high-resolution aerial photographs of the Fresh Kills region to the Freshkills Park flickr stream?" It is our belief that there are not. The Freshkills Park blog is where this Staten Island magic is found. The historical context: "Close inspection tracks the expansion of landfill operations over marsh land, the development of the West Shore Expressway through the site and the influx of new residential communities (as well as commercial outlets such as the Staten Island mall) to the region." Above, a shot from 1954, soon after landfill operations began. Yep, still looks like Mars.
