Endangered Bowery Relic Up for Sale for $6.5 Million

New, 12 comments

We bet 135 Bowery owner Ricky Wong remembers June 15, the day the Landmarks Preservation Commission took emergency action to preserve the Federal-style 1818 house/former gambling den. We certainly would, if the LPC calendaring had messed up our DOB-approved plans for a four-story addition to the building. At the time, Wong said the building was too ugly, not to mention leaky, old, and just plain broken, to deserve landmark designation. Which explains why he hired an architect to draw up fresh plans and then gutted the place. That brings us to the rare destructoporn/on the market double feature, because the property is now on the market. "There are air rights, you can build up to 8 stories," says the very brief $6.5 million listing. Just try not to trash-talk the LPC's choices first.
