1947: When the Suburbs Hit the City

A snowy photo of what looked like a suburban house on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 48th Street in 1947 got the folks at Gothamist wondering. Some investigation later, it turns out that, yes, there was a suburban-style house on that corner in 1947. And a different one a year later. The first was the headquarters for a Spence-Chapin Adoption Agency fund drive and was then raffled off. The second was an advertisement for a Cary Grant film, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, in which Mr. Blandings, uh, moves out of New York City. [Gothamist]
