Broker-blogger Andrew Fine reports that demolition of the former elementary school at 57th Street and Second Avenue is underway, setting the stage for what will eventually be a new school building, a Whole Foods and, economy permitting, one of the more interesting residential towers we've seen in a while. We're speaking of the 59-story, SOM-designed 250 East 57th Street, which for now remains an uncertain Phase II for this public-private project. If it falls through, at least the neighborhood will still get its quinoa. [A Fine]
