The long-running plan for a Whole Foods on Third Avenue in Gowanus is still clinging desperately to any hope that it might actually ever come to exist. Cleanup of the contaminated site began last week and soil excavation will begin next week, according to John Bogdanski, who's in charge of the cleanup. That doesn't mean Whole Fields will necessarily build on the site once it's no longer toxic, but because the cleanup tax credits are paid out over 10 years, it wouldn't be in Whole Foods' interest to flip the property, either. Not exactly the 100% guarantee veggie addicts were probably looking for. [BK Paper; previously]
