Brooklyn's Next Armory?

Now that the long process of remaking the Park Slope Armory is over with, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is turning his attention to, ah, more potential armory refurbishment projects. In his State of the Borough address tonight, Markowitz plans to announce a proposal to turn the fortress-like Bedford-Atlantic Armory into a rec center. The Homeless Services Department has already pledged $10 million of the project's $20 million cost. Why homeless services? The department is also planning to open an intake center for homeless men at the armory, a proposal for which some Crown Heights residents have demonstrated a marked lack of enthusiasm. [NYDN]
