All the Ways to Say 'River House' Without Saying 'River House'

New, 3 comments

Classic Sutton Place co-op River House has recently been called a has-been, but one reminder of its uber-exclusivity remains: Brokers are told not to mention the building by name or address in listings?under penalty of death, we assume. We were reminded of this fact yesterday when we covered romance novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford's staggering floorplan porn in the name that cannot be mentioned. Here now, a tutorial on how to talk about River House without talking about River House, sourced from current listings in the building:

1) "East 52nd Street... A white glove cooperative facing 52nd Street and the East River, this building epitomizes gracious living today as much as it did when it was first built in 1931." [Sotheby's]
2) "On the River... This white glove prestigious building is a masterpiece of the Art Deco period." [Sotheby's]

3) "Rare on the River... one of New York's finest buildings." [Brown Harris Stevens]
4) "Splendor on the River" [Brown Harris Stevens]
5) "Old World Charm at its finest in this white glove prewar cooperative on East 52nd Street and the East River." [Warburg]
6) "Elegant Home on the East River... one of New York's most prestigious prewar cooperatives." [Stribling]

So does anyone really give a crap? Maybe! According to the authority on such matters, Carter B. Horsley, River House is "the epitome of 'swell' living." Surely some things are sacred in the land of the swells.
