MTA's Fake Village Townhouse Needs a Better Disguise

New, 19 comments

Harsh words were uttered last week about the MTA's proposed subway ventilation plant at Mulry Square?the empty fenced-in triangle surrounded by the Tiles for America 9/11 memorial (and one-time home of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" diner). Now we know why! The rendering of the townhouse-imitating "faux-cade" design we ran with that item was an earlier design concept presented by the MTA last year. Seen above is what the agency has been showing off in recent meetings: a flimsy "brownstone" facade superglued onto a big concrete box. Updating our fake townhouses scorecard, we're going to have to call the score as Brooklyn Heights 1, Greenwich Village 0.
