Whole-Foods-Sporting 57th Street Tower Breaks Ground

Sutton Placers can almost taste the seitan: Moments ago, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for 250 East 57th Street, a very interesting looking $500 million mixed-use development that, when all is said and done, will have two schools, a Whole Foods supermarket and a 350-unit glassy residential tower hovering above. The project, a complicated public-private partnership (World-Wide Group is the developer) has had its hiccups along the way, but it's looking like all systems are go. Though the SOM-designed apartment building is not in Phase 1 of the plan, the press release accompanying the groundbreaking announcement is bullish on the residential tower actually happening. Last we checked, it was going to include condos and rentals, though we'll have to see how that shakes out.
