This Thursday is the day that the New School will reveal the latest version of its several-years-in-the-making plan for 65 Fifth Avenue. There's already full-on destructoporn at the site, but there's a holdup with the new construction: Manhattan House. What does an Upper East Side condo conversion with its own set of troubles have to do with a Greenwich Village academic building? Let's ask the union rat.
Tishman Construction Corp. is both the construction manager for the New School project and the owner's representative at Manhattan House. At the UES project, unionized painters are not being used?and the painters' union is blocking work at the New School as a result. Tishman says it has no control over construction contracts at Manhattan House but would use union painters on the New School project if a labor agreement were reached. Which will we see sooner: an agreement on this, or an approved design for the new building?
