Early murmurs of a plan to put a mosque and Islamic cultural center at 45 Park Place, where a plane's landing gear assembly fell through the roof on 9/11, met with mixed responses. And we're betting things will get a lot more heated tonight, when Community Board 1 will hold a public meeting on the issue. The proposed center, which has the backing of the team behind the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, would include a 500-seat auditorium, basketball court, and swimming pool, could offer classes for Muslims and non-Muslims, and could play host to a Muslim Idol talent competition. Opponents of the project equate the mosque with terrorism and want it nowhere near the World Trade Center site. An interesting debate that can only be made more so by the fact that it's happening under the eyes of the certifiably insane CB 1.
