Harlem Buildings' Sales Tactics; More Library Light Show Opposition

New, 2 comments

EAST HARLEM?Adding to the financial puzzle that is East 118th Street's Embelesar 118 (right) is a press release informing us that the building has qualified for State of New York Mortgage Agency-backed loans. We're still not sure what Wall Street workers are doing in this building's sales pitch, but hey, congrats! [CurbedWire Inbox]

EAST HARLEM?Also in East Harlem new development news, Tapestry, at 245 East 124th Street, will be hosting an art exhibition starting tomorrow, and it's got a performance piece! "Crocheted Grapefruit" involves five people standing in the street, wearing "crocheted camouflage" and holding canvases. Artist Olek "will draw a hole in each canvas through which the performers will shake hands with passersby." Brokers will be checking whose handshake gets the most leases signed! [CurbedWire Inbox]

MIDTOWN?Our concerned citizen commenter isn't the only one not in favor of the new lighting scheme on the table for the New York Public Library's Fifth Avenue building. The Historic Districts Council thinks the NYPL is better than that!
HDC lays it on thick in its weekly newsletter: "It is almost as if the library already has its own lighting plan that expresses its very being. We notice the incredible Carrere & Hastings structure during the day, while at night we have a different view that reminds us of the light of knowledge held within those Beaux-Arts walls....Subtlety is something we sometimes forget in New York City, but not every building is meant to light up like those just two block west of the library."
