Before Community Board 7 gives an advisory yay or nay to Riverside Center, the board has scheduled five public hearings over the next two months, the first of which comes tonight, the Westside Independent notes. This will give Upper West Siders plenty of chances to sound off on Extell's proposed mixed-use development hugging the West Side Highway between 59th and 61st Streets, which includes five skyscrapers and 2,500 apartments (and parking, green space, retail, a movie theater, a school, etc. What will they say?
NY1 spoke to some of the project's critics, and if their comments are a preview of what's to come over the next couple of months, this battle should turn into quite the doozy. Said one local activist, "This will effect everybody on the Upper West Side. To propose building a 54-story building, it's out of scale. When do we stop, when do we really stop?" Funny, developers have been asking NIMBYs that same question since the beginning of time.
