The Dexter House single-room occupancy hotel was just sitting on West 86th Street, minding its own business when a group of students from India turned up to rent rooms for 12 weeks. Uh, right. Actually, the dormification of the building is just the latest move in the battle between the building's owner and rent-controlled tenants, one in which the owner allegedly asked a tenant, "What, you're not dead yet?" We'll be watching this one while the state kicks around those illegal hotel bills. [Real Deal]
