Village History Scandal!

Vanishing New York has come to the conclusion that the Village diner immortalized in Edward Hopper's Nighthawks painting may not have ever existed. The investigation involved trips to the Municipal Archives, combing through Land Books, examining microfilm and other methods of research we wouldn't wish on anyone. It's Village lore that the diner stood in Mulry Square, where the MTA now wants to build a faux-townhouse. An earlier design even paid homage to Nighthawks. Oh well, our lives are all lies. The Matrix wins! [VNY]
