A 40-foot-long section of the old West Street river wall can now be seen at ground zero from the Winter Garden observation gallery at the World Financial Center, but act fast: the stone Hudson River bulkhead will soon be demolished to make way for an underground tunnel to the new World Trade Center. Won't we all drown? Nope, this river wall, built in 1899, was retired when that lovable landfill called Battery Park City was created. Phew, we're taking off our life vests. [City Room]
