Norman Foster's Big Red Ride Getting Ready on the Bowery

New, 2 comments

It's a long trip out to Coney Island and all its new beachfront excitement, but soon the Lower East Side will have a thrill ride of its own, thanks to the crew at Foster + Partners. Their big elevator for the Sperone Westwater Gallery being built at 257 Bowery is now in place and can be seen slowly climbing up the five floor base as workers inside get things in order. But don't call it a regular old elevator, starchitecture fans.

It's actually a 12' x 20' foot moving room, faced in milled glass, that will include gallery space, allowing certain exhibitions at Sperone Westwater to grow. Still to come is the illumination that will make the rising room glow red, a nice counterpoint to the glowing white boxes of the New Museum to the south, and an effect that's bound to be better than Brooklyn's blue box. If the rubescent renderings by dbox are any indication, the Foster fun ride is a sure-fire candidate for the next list of buildings that light up our lives.
