East Villagers and members of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral at 59 East 2nd Street are sparring over the proposed landmarking of the Gothic-style church. The church says it can't afford the necessary repairs if the building is landmarked, and neighbors don't want to see that bizarre eight-story addition plopped on top. But since that proposal surfaced, a rezoning has made an addition that size impossible, and the church's dean admits it was an "absurd" idea. [The Villager]
