The federal government couldn't even give away the three historic lighthouses it wants to get rid of off Long Island and Staten Island?the state, local governments, and nonprofits all said no to offshore freebies. That means the Latimer Reef Lighthouse, Old Orchard Light Station, and West Bank Lighthouse, all still active lighthouses (so the Coast Guard needs a copy of the keys), are now on the online auction block. Only Latimer Reef Lighthouse (above left) has a bid so far, of $10,000. Turning any of the places into a residential property could cost another $250,000 to $1 million, a lighthouse expert tells the Wall Street Journal. Which still could make it a not-so-pricey summer home alternative to the Hamptons.
